In today’s interconnected world, animal air cargo transportation has emerged as a vital component of the global transportation industry, especially when it comes to safely relocating our beloved pets. Recognising the importance of pet relocation and the significance of their welfare during transit, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) has implemented a stringent set of rules and regulations governing the transportation of pets by air.

To ensure the utmost safety and well-being of animals during air travel, IATA has developed a comprehensive set of guidelines known as the Live Animals Regulations (LAR). These regulations outline the standards that airlines, freight forwarders, and shippers must adhere to when transporting live animals by air, ensuring compliance with international standards.

Central to the LAR is the requirement for pets to be transported in suitable containers that prioritise their safety and comfort. Containers must be strong, durable, and provide sufficient space for pets to stand, sit, and lie down comfortably. Feeding and watering are essential during transport, with provisions tailored to the specific needs of each animal. Adequate care and attention are also crucial before and after transportation, including access to veterinary care if required.

Handling procedures are rigorously regulated, emphasising proper training and qualifications for all personnel involved in the transportation process. Airlines and freight forwarders must possess suitable equipment and facilities to handle animals safely. Temperature control is paramount, ensuring animals are not subjected to extreme temperatures. Pets usually travel in dedicated compartments on passenger flights, separate from luggage, and the cargo hold is pressurised and equipped with controlled lighting and temperature, creating a conducive environment for pets.

Compliance with import/ export regulations, permits, certifications, and animal welfare laws of origin, destination, and transit countries is imperative and must never be overlooked.

At Global Pets, a specialised animal transport department under Global International Relocation, they take pride in being a member of the International Pet and Animal Transportation Association (IPATA). As dedicated professionals committed to the safe and humane transport of pets, they offer reliable and compassionate pet relocation services. The team possesses extensive knowledge, unwavering dedication, and a wealth of experience to ensure that each journey is seamless, secure, and in full compliance with IATA’s rules and guidelines.

“At Global Pets, we deeply understand the profound bond between pets and their owners. With every transport, we apply, not only our expertise, dedication, and experience, but also the true love and respect we fell for animals, to ensure that their journey is as stress-free, safe, and comfortable as possible”, Luís Duarte, Chief Sales Officer at Global International Relocation, tells us.
