Bags of a popular pet food are being recalled because they may contain loose metal pieces, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced.
Bags of dry dog kibble sold under the name “Pedigree Adult Complete Nutrition Grilled Steak & Vegetable Flavor Dry Dog Food” and produced by Mars Petcare US are currently subject to a voluntary recall after they were found to contain pieces of metal. According to the company, 315 bags of the 44-pound size product are affected.
The recalled product has a best-by date of March 4, 2025, and a lot code of 410B2TXT02. The lot code can be found on the back of the packaging near the bottom of the bag, next to the barcode. Products were sold in Walmart stores in four southern U.S. states only: Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas.
The product packaging is bright yellow in color with a golden retriever on the front. The company logo is a large blue rosette with “pedigree” in white lettering over the top.

The FDA notice didn’t specify how metal came to be in the dog food bags or whether it was discovered by a consumer or through the company’s own product control measures.
Newsweek contacted the Pedigree division of Mars Petcare US via the contact form on its website outside of normal working hours for comment.
No reports of injury or illness to pets have been reported regarding the product, the company has confirmed. “If you believe your pet has consumed the affected product, you should monitor for unusual behavior and contact a veterinarian in the event of any concerns,” the recall notice reads.
Mars Petcare US reassured consumers that no other products are impacted and that they are working with Walmart to ensure “that the affected products are no longer sold and have been removed from inventory.”

The FDA issues food recalls when it detects, or is notified of, a defect with a food, supplement, or medicine product. Many of these recalls concern undeclared allergens or contaminations with illness producing bacteria like E.coli or salmonella. Recalls concerning foreign objects like metal or plastic are rarer.
Late in April, the FDA notified consumers of metal shards found in bulk-buy Creamy Creations ice cream cups produced by H-E-B, which were distributed to a variety of stores in Texas. There were no injuries reported in relation to that recall.
