KAISERAUGST, SWITZERLAND and MALDEGEM, BELGIUM — dsm-firmenich, an innovator in the health and nutrition industries, and BESTMIX Software, a leader in feed and pet food production solutions, announced a strategic partnership. The two companies will combine resources to measure and manage the environmental footprint of animal feed by combining BESTMIX’s software tools with dsm-firmenich’s Sustell™ full life cycle assessment (LCA) platform.

It is estimated that around one-third of the world’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions come from food production. As a result, feed and food related companies are encouraged to measure and report, and oftentimes reduce their environmental footprints — this demand requires data, according to BESTMIX.

“We are delighted to partner with dsm-firmenich, using Sustell to offer our customers a cutting-edge solution for measuring and managing the environmental impact of their feed production,” said Gerard Marneth, chief executive officer at BESTMIX. “We believe that this partnership will create value for our customers and contribute to a more sustainable future for the feed and food industry.”

Utilizing the Sustell LCA platform, feed producers can generate and share their feed footprints easily. This integration will assist feed producers “in addressing future demands of feed labeling, while simultaneously helping farmers accurately quantify the environmental impact of products such as eggs, meat, milk and farmed seafood,” dsm-firmenich said.

Allowing feed producers, farmers, processors, food companies and retailers to accurately report their emissions and track their environmental footprints moves the industry closer to full value chain transparency, which in the long run will improve sustainability practices throughout the entire food industry.

“Feed is a critical part of the food value chain,” said David Nickell, vice president of sustainability and business solutions at dsm-firmenich, Animal Nutrition and Health. “By connecting Sustell with a well-known software player such as BESTMIX, we further realize our ambition to connect the entire farm-to-fork ecosystem. Reliable, easy-to-use LCA footprinting is the key to enabling cooperation throughout the value chain to meet the challenge and seize the opportunities related to sustainability.”
