Adapted from a press release.

The Pet Food Institute (PFI) has launched a series of five webinars conducted by pet food makers for pet food makers focused on the Pet Food Label Modernization initiative (PFLM). This initiative creates new model regulations for pet food labels and packages, aligning them more closely with human food labels. The modernized design aims to provide greater consistency and understanding for pet owners when shopping for food, treats or supplements for their pets.

PFI is dedicated to educating pet food manufacturers about the label requirement changes outlined in the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) model regulations published this past January. These webinars will enable pet food producers to listen, learn and collaborate on the new label guidelines. Registration for all five webinars is available here.

“We are encouraged by the large participation in the first webinar and the level of discussion surrounding the changes resulting from the Pet Food Label Modernization effort,” said Kelly Kanaras, PFI’s director of communications and membership. “These changes will help pet food labels convey the best possible information about pet food products to regulators, veterinarians, and, most importantly, pet owners.”

The educational program began with an introduction into labeling changes on July 10. Future webinars include:

  • August 14, — Intended Use Statement guidelines
  • September 11 — Pet Nutrition Facts Box
  • October 16 — Fiber and Calorie Calculation
  • November 13 — Ingredient Statements, Handling and Storage

All webinars are free and will take place at 3 p.m. ET. The virtual training sessions will culminate with a hands-on workshop in early 2025. For more information and to access past webinar recordings, click here.
