Dec. 2—The Feed Bin, a staple on West Alameda Street for 52 years, closed Monday.
It was the only store in the multistate Hubbard Feeds chain, owned by Alltech, to face a shutdown, a spokesman said.
“The Feed Bin was closed after reviewing our business needs,” Alltech spokesman Andrew Sturgill wrote in an email. “We determined that this retail location does not align geographically with our key customer base. No other Hubbard Feeds retail locations were affected with the closure of The Feed Bin.”
Along with a wide array of animal feed, The Feed Bin was known for having dozens of chicks and ducklings wandering about.
The Santa Fe store was acquired by Mankato, Minn.-based Hubbard Feeds in 2016 when it took over Ranch-Way Feeds of Fort Collins, Colo. Alltech, a global animal health and nutrition company based in Lexington, Ky., had acquired Hubbard in 2015.
The Feed Bin had carried Ranch-Way products for about 35 years.
The location opened in November 1971 as Dooley Feeds, a company dating to at least 1945, according to The New Mexican archives.
The building dates to 1958, Santa Fe County assessor records show.
The store carried birdseed and feed for horses, poultry, rabbits, goats, sheep and cattle. It also had a selection of pet food, tack, hay and straw.
Sturgill said Hubbard Feeds is providing transition packages for Feed Bin employees affected by the closure.
“We encourage Feed Bin customers to shop with other local retailers, such as Big R, which will continue to carry many of the same products,” Sturgill said.
